Changing Habits Graduate Triumphs at Wrexham 10K, Championing Health and Community with the Rainbow Foundation

The Wrexham 10K saw an incredible display of determination and perseverance this weekend, with 28 Rainbow Runners lacing up their trainers to raise funds for the Rainbow Foundation. Among them was Patricia Downes, a proud graduate of the Changing Habits for Life Programme, who took on the challenge as part of this inspiring team effort to support the foundation’s mission.

Patricia’s journey to the finish line is more than just an athletic achievement, it is a testament to the transformative power of adopting healthier habits and receiving community support. Before joining the Changing Habits Programme, Patricia never imagined herself completing such a challenge. However, through dedication, guidance, and encouragement from the Rainbow Foundation, she embraced a lifestyle of positive change.

Patricia says “I ran the Wrexham 10K, something I never imagined possible before starting with the Rainbow Foundation. It was a real challenge, but I kept putting one foot in front of the other and ended up jogging more than I thought I would! My legs are aching now, but I am incredibly proud, not just of finishing the race, but of the changes I’ve made. My family and I have transformed our habits, and we’re living healthier, happier lives because of it.”

The Changing Habits for Life Programme is a FREE 12-week course meeting twice a week designed to address the modern-day struggles of maintaining physical and mental wellbeing. Delivered in collaboration with Wrexham University’s Sports Science department, participants receive tailored guidance based on key health metrics, including body fat percentage, blood glucose levels, and cardiovascular fitness.

With an evidence-based approach, the programme educates participants on the psychological and medical factors influencing food choices and lifestyle habits, helping individuals make sustainable, positive changes. The programme also provides the opportunity to experience a variety of taster activities to inspire their own active future.

Since its inception in May 2024, the programme has helped over 30 individuals take control of their health, proving that small, consistent changes can lead to life-changing results.

Patricia adds: “The Rainbow Foundation does a fantastic job. Joining Changing Habits has given me incredible health benefits. I’ve lost weight, exercised more, and feel better than ever! We’re lucky to have such a fantastic charity supporting our community.”

Programme Coordinator Maria Shaw says: “The Rainbow Foundation’s Changing Habits Programme encourages people to take the first step toward a healthier future. Patricia’s achievement at the Wrexham 10K is not just a personal victory, it’s a celebration of transformation, resilience, and the power of community-led change.”
