Changing the Narrative on Suicide: Rainbow Foundation Leads the Way with Enhanced Social Prescribing

On Wednesday 10th September 2025, the Rainbow Foundation will joined the global movement for World Suicide Prevention Day, embracing this year’s theme: “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”, set by the World Health Organization and the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

The campaign calls on communities to challenge stigma, encourage open conversations, and foster compassionate environments where people feel safe to seek help.

Lisa White, Enhanced Social Prescribing Lead at the Rainbow Foundation, recently completed Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and shares four vital truths to help reduce stigma and fear:

  1. Suicide is preventable – with the right support, people can recover and lead fulfilling lives.
  2. Suicide isn’t selfish – it often stems from overwhelming emotional pain and distorted thinking, not a lack of care for others.
  3. Talking about suicide saves lives – open conversations reduce stigma, raise awareness, and encourages people to seek help.
  4. Suicide prevention is everyone’s business – we all have a role to play in creating a culture of compassion and care.

Lisa explains “When someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts, it’s often because they can’t see a way to stop the pain. Through our Social Prescribing, we’re helping people find hope again. We’re connecting them with the right support, at the right time, in a way that feels safe and human. We also offer dedicated bereavement support, helping individuals navigate the complex emotions of grief with care and understanding.”

Delivered through local GP practices, Social Prescribing is a free service designed to empower individuals to take charge of their wellbeing. It offers a blend of talking therapy, practical support, and personalised signposting to help people find the right help at the right time.

The service is available to anyone aged 18 or over who is registered with a Wrexham GP. Self-referrals are welcome via spt@therainbowfoundation.org.uk. The Rainbow Foundation Social Prescribing Team was recently recognised as the Best Mental Health Support Service in Wales.
