Honouring LGBT History: A Safe Space for Storytelling and Reflection

Claiming our past, celebrating our present, creating our future!

This LGBT History Month, Pride Wrecsam and the Rainbow Foundation invite local residents to share their stories in a secure and accessible environment. The collaboration aims to explore the experiences of older LGBT individuals, reflecting on the past and examining what it means to be LGBTQIA+ in North Wales today.

While societal attitudes towards LGBT people have progressed since the decriminalization of homosexuality in 1967, many older individuals in Wales and beyond have endured persecution and attacks. Despite significant strides, there is still much work to be done.

The Rainbow Foundation are an active ageing charity based in Wrexham, supporting people with a range of services as they age. Ian Pope, Director of Operations at the Foundation says:

“Many older LGBT individuals are hesitant to disclose their identity due to fear of potential consequences. Those who do come out often face anxiety and worry from repeatedly ‘coming out’. As we age, interactions with health and care services can exacerbate these anxieties.”

Research indicates that LGBTQIA+ individuals are more likely to experience poorer health outcomes. An NHS survey conducted in 2017 revealed the following:

  • 16% of respondents who accessed or tried to access public health services reported a negative experience due to their sexual orientation.
  • 38% of respondents faced negativity due to their gender identity.
  • 51% of those who accessed or tried to access mental health services felt the wait time was too long.
  • 27% were worried, anxious, or embarrassed about seeking mental health services.
  • 16% reported unsupportive GPs.
  • 80% of trans respondents found accessing gender identity clinics challenging, with long waiting times being the most common barrier.

Ian adds “we are excited to work with Wrecsam Pride to help support people who may be fearful or worried about accessing the health and care system.”

Join Pride Wrecsam and the Rainbow Foundation for a warm gathering at Lle Hapus in Eagles Meadow on Sunday 23rd February at 2 PM. Share your stories over a hot drink and biscuit. The venue is fully accessible, and transport can be arranged if needed.
